Your imagination needs no boundaries when you see the world through the eyes of Sarah Kay
I’ve had the great pleasure to work with the new release Sarah Kay Love Collection from Devonstone distributed by 2 Green Zebras.
This is an extremely whimsical group of fabrics, featuring the iconic pretty Sarah Kay, barefoot lover of sunshine, springtime and floppy straw hats. You may remember the first appearance of Sarah Kay back in the 1970s where she became a fashion icon.
I don’t remember Sarah Kay– I was probably just a bit too young– but I sure wish I’d known Sarah Kay back then.
Her timeless philosophy rings true always and forever … it was to be ‘kind in spirit and full of heart, believing that we can make the world a better, more beautiful place, starting right in our own backyards.’
Her story was full of beauty and inspiration, with so many lovely quotes ...
I only ordered a few of the prints from this collection, and I urge you to check them all out! Each one is more beautiful than the last, with the most romantic tiny florals, country ginghams and pastel 'scapes to play with. I wished I’d ordered them all now!
It’s always interesting to me where the inspiration for a design comes from. Sometimes I just know immediately when I see new fabric what I’m going to make it into.
Other times I know I love the fabric, but I don’t have a plan for it yet.
Sarah Kay was the later for me here, but almost as soon as it arrived, my MIL asked me to make her a knitting needle folder, and she never asks me for anything!
It was the perfect project and I jumped at the chance!
Mum gave me the details of the needles she uses most often, and the other notions she likes to keep handy.
Once we’d worked out the essentials the kit needed to have, it really spoke the design to life – and the rest came easily.
Of course Sarah Kay herself needed to feature front and centre!
So this folder has a combo of pockets for tall needles that are easy to take out and put away again. The flap on the top makes sure they can’t fall out from the top.
Mum has a vintage row counter that she’s used for many years, and needs to be on hand for easy use. So I added the cutest little pocket on the front to store this.
When you have a selvedge as cute as this one, it's hard to just cut it off, so I used it as a feature label on the other side, just so Sarah doesn't forget her name! But also as an ode to the timeless message she spreads.
I absolutely love making custom binding, especially when it's this pretty! The top of the pocket and the flap are bound in one of the tiny florals, and makes a big statement.
Mum’s also got an assortment of other notions and knitting paraphernalia, so I added a pencil case style pouch on the side, which folds inside when you fold it up.
The little Sarah Kay cameo made it onto the front cover, with a sweet pieced patchwork section above it.
While this is still very much the first version, it works for mum’s needs and shows my proof of concept.
I absolutely love where this is heading, and hope to develop a pattern for it in the future!
Sarah Kay With Love hits stores in April! Ask your LQS to stock it for you, and leave me a comment below if Sarah Kay was a big part of your childhood!
