My oven mitts never last very long. They always end up stained and burnt and holey, and before you know it, they're not doing their job anymore...which is to protect your hands! My mum was also in need of some new ones, so I made her some for Christmas.

I didn't know before starting these that there is actually a special heat resistant liner, called 'Insul-Bright" that you can put with your woolen felt to give your mitts better thermal qualities. It's behaves just like felt, and claims to wash and wear well.

To make one mitt measuring 20cm square: Download the Free Hot Mitt Pattern. Two fat quarters work well for this design. I prefer to make my own bias binding, as it's not difficult, and you can match your fabrics nicely. Here's a good tutorial to help if you've never made it before. Make a sandwich with one fabric front, a layer of felt, a layer of Insul-Bright, and then the final layer of fabric.

Quilt through the layers with your chosen design. Stripes straight or diagonal quilting are a good simple design for this. Repeat this with the back piece. Cut out the pattern, centering it on your quilting design.Next you need to bind the straight edge of the front.

Place the front and back together, and stitch closely around the edge of the whole lot.

Now it's time to make the little loop that the oven mitt will hang from. You need 10cm of bias binding for this.

Stitch this together down the length of it, then put the ends together and and sew it to one corner of your mitt.Pin and stitch your binding around the edge.

Now turn over, pin and stitch the binding down.

Turn the loop up to the top and stitch this along the stitching line at its base, to make it stand up. Your oven mitt is now finished!

Here's another colour combination. Can you tell my favourite colours at the moment??
