A couple of weeks ago, my son and daughter were each invited to separate 10th birthday parties.
My immediate thought was to make a personalised pencil case for each of the birthday girls, and I knew from early on that they would be very different. One girl is my daughter's best friend, and we know her tastes very well...she's totally girlie, loves pink and wearing dresses. Totally me...I get that. I could make her the pencilcase that I would like to have! Curly script, flowers, dots, and a touch of French (they are a French speaking family, so it seemed appropriate).
So Georgia's pencil case was born...floral and feminine.
And now for the second one...My son informed me that the girl whose party he was going to would not like something like that at all. He wasn't sure, but he was definite that she DIDN'T like pink and pretty. So my go to in that instance is bright and geometric. I had just bought Spotlight's collection of rainbow brights, and it seemed the perfect project to use it for. Here is Chelsy's pencil case. As you can see her name is spelt differently to the common way that I've seen, so hopefully receiving something personalised would be an extra special surprise.
Both these pencil cases are made using the quilt-as-you-go technique, and the lettering is made by printing out the font of your choosing, and tracing onto heat-and-bond or wonder under. Chelsy's named is raw edge applique, and is about as simple as it comes in stitching on lettering.
I think the owl adds just the right amount of cuteness and fun.
As it turned out, both gifts were a hit, and I had a lot of fun creating two very different styles.
